"Neither the Central Government nor the successive State Governments have paid heed to communication problems of the area," they rued.

Sissen village under Kebang circle in East Siang is still unconnected with rest of the country through surface communication which has hampered the economic development of the area.

The porter tracks are the only means of surface communication in hilly areas. Non-existence of road in the village has not only causing heavy loss to farmers but also hampering the education of children as teachers are reluctant to go to schools for that reason.

"Our frustration stems from the fact that the successive state governments have been depriving the area from road construction schemes in the pretext of low density of population. The administration is trying to malign the leading villagers with criminal cases and thereby disgracing the sentiments of the local people. We have decided to organize massive rally at Boleng town and Paighat besides staging dharna at the DC's office protesting against the alleged injustice", said Karunath Pazing, the publicity secretary of Nugong Banggo Welfare Society.

Woeful experience of election process

Dear Editor,

The recent simultaneous election can be termed as most haphazard election procedure in the context of West Siang district. It started with a list of around 220 Presiding and polling officials for the training in three phases. All the training except EVM was a verbal with little help of Black board, without sample forms. Third and final round of training at Gensi Keba Dere was also LUMP-SUM training. Trainers tried hard with lone EVM and past experiences.

No hand book for presiding officers was distributed. On 5th of April when I was busy with the officials coming for PB, a call came to a friend of mine that Officials for 32-Rumgong A/c is to move on 6th April from Aalo (without any provision to lift Polling officials from Gensi to Aalo). Anyhow on 6th April we went towards Aalo early in a friend’s car. On reaching Aalo we came to know that Rumgong and Kayin Polling team already left in the morning. Till then we were unable to locate the name of our polling stations. By next morning on 7th April we reached Kaying by 8:00 am, then again we were shocked to find that the floor of Old Block Office which was allocated for our staying was totally damp and there was not even a bench in the name of furniture. Anyway we managed it. Polling went of peacefully on 9th April but by the time we reached Aalo Club around 8 pm with polling materials; it was like a fish market with only five tables receiving election materials for entire West Siang. I manage to deposit the materials and EVM after struggling for more than 5 hours at 01:15am on 10th April without having my dinner in the previous night. The relief didn't last long; again I waited till morning 7 am to have my clearance certificate which went on vain. By 1 pm, I had to push aside the receiving table and sneak inside to find that the papers I have deposited in early 1:15 am wasn't picked up yet for scrutiny. I picked it up myself and placed it to the scrutinizing table to have it scrutinized by 3 pm. This time there was lot of mismanagement and in-experience shown in the management of election process. And above all mo armed personals (except few APP and APPBN constables with sticks) were provided to escort EVM and polling personals fron Kaying to Aalo. Then again no vehicle was provided to lift polling personals of Gensi as if Gensi is not connected with road from Aalo itself or Polling officials from Gensi are like bonded labourers to work before the order comes. We the officials of Gensi are performing election duty only for the sake of democracy. Otherwise we would have stayed in Gensi till the order comes and wait for official vehicles.

Yours,

K. Basar, Gensi

Pleasant experience of election duty

Dear Editor,

Somebody said that Election time is no less than a celebration. It was right. Being in a job categorized as "Essential Services" did not deter my spirit to perform the 'National Duty'. Armed with the knowledge of EVM handlings from a day's training and conducting election was something sort of a challenge for all of us in the group. All of us were first-timers with the same level of enthusiasm to do the first 'important duty'.

Kurung Kumey is thought to be un-friendly. Many were overheard telling each other of uncertainties of good things happening around there. But, as one member of our group murmured that he underestimated the behavior of the local people and misunderstood the places to be unfriendly and in-accessible. It was not so. There were gentle and understanding men and the gentle hillocks looked beautiful and melancholic. Rear birds were heard chirping in the jungle.

The sojourn was no less a tour of the district. At a stretch of five days we almost covered the whole district of Kurung Kumey. The group rather missed the chances of not having assigned duties at places like Yangte, Chambang, Sarli, Parsi Parlo, Damin, Tali, Pip Sorang.

The moment we departed from the dispatch centre, there have been assertions as to how the atmosphere at the polling centre could be. We discussed our own strategies to cope rather than tackle any unfavourable happenings.

The count-down began at 5 o’clock on 9th morning April, 2014 when one of us got up and announced the ticking time. Halting in a room nearby the polling booth helped us take few extra minutes to do our morning chores leisurely. By 6 o’clock we shifted the polling materials.

While we were getting all pieces in place, the polling agents of the political parties arrived in time. It was real consolation when all three of them looked un-usually friendly amongst themselves. Voting started at the right time as stipulated. Except the loud voices of elderly men and women cracking village joke, nothing of the arguments and challenges, as normally happen on polling days, seemed to be taking place around the booth. Our spirit of performing duties took a front seat. Except some bickering amongst the polling agents, the polling was peaceful and we completed the processes exactly in the stipulated time frame. The Presiding Officer pushed the ‘CLOSE’ button in time 20 minutes earlier after waiting for sometimes ascertaining that no voter was left.

It was around 7 o’clock night that we boarded the Tata Sumo Trekker. It was rather joyous moment for all of us that night, for one of our attendant offered to let us enjoy the night at his home. Passing the night, we boarded the vehicle early in the morning for our last destination where that ‘VERY IMPORTANT’ stuff called the Electronic Voting Machines was to be deposited at the strong room. It was an ‘All is well that ends well’.

Yours,

Tabu

Lost generation

Dear Editor,

These days everyone in our state is busy debating about the corruption issues. Others are lost in calculating election result by asking public opinion and doing survey. I am quite depressed and deeply shocked, seeing teenagers of our twin capital city. The use of drugs and alcohol amongst teenagers is now very common in our locality. These boys roam late night in the street. They spend most of their time at cyber café and snooker house, riding bikes recklessly on roads and risking their own life and the life of innocent citizen. They practice all these activities merely for little enjoyment but they don’t realize, what could be the consequences of all these. Gradually their Physical, Social and Academic performances decline as a reward of their ill activities.

We are losing our present generation- as they are moving towards wrong direction. Due to this our state has dark future. At the same time instead of taking these matters seriously, the parents and society becomes just a silent spectator and does nothing. Lacking a purpose in life, despairing millions seek refuge in drugs and alcohol, in crimes and other antisocial activities. Those with money may lose themselves in unbridled consumerism. For those who find purposes beyond his own advancement have sparkle in their eyes even at eighty years of age, those who do not, look vacant eyed even at forty.

I hope to see positive response from the responsible public and senior citizens of the state to tackle the situation in time before our teenagers completely immerses themselves into awful activities and before it becomes bad to worse.

Yours,

Jombom Pakam

Naharlagun.

PM and Congress president should clear the air

Revelation after revelation about how Congress president Sonia Gandhi undermine Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during 10 years of UPA rule have left Congress red face. A new book accuses Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of being weak and unable to stamp out corruption, the second recent attack by an insider that will hurt Congress party as it seeks re-election despite trailing in opinion polls. That impression was underlined in a book, published on Monday, called "Crusader or Conspirator? Coalgate and Other Truths" by PC Parakh, who retired as coal secretary in 2005. It said Singh's inability to take on vested interests led to the so-called "Coalgate" scandal, which rocked his premiership.

It was the second book in the last week to portray 81-year-old Singh, Prime Minister since 2004, as a well-intentioned man of high personal integrity but one often unable to assert his authority. The other, by former media adviser to Singh, Sanjaya Baru, was greeted with glee by the principal opposition party BJP, and the party is expected to seize on the Coalgate book to try to land another blow at a crucial time. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi should come out and clear the air. Besides these two, no one is sure whether the books speak truth or not? PMO is highly respected institution and if allegation of a political party head dictating terms in PMO is true, for sure it does not augur well for the country.
